Swimming Coach Bursary Scheme

The NDCS Sports Coach Bursary Scheme is now live! We’re looking to support any deaf individuals (16+) who wish to take their swim teaching / coaching qualifications and become a swim teacher / coach!

What is the Coach Bursary Scheme?

The scheme aims to support young people and adults gain formal swim coaching qualifications and empower them to deliver swimming activities to deaf children and young people. The scheme is managed by NDCS and will financially support people to gain a swim coaching qualification or to improve their existing coaching qualification.

Who is the Coach Bursary Scheme aimed at?

Applicants from across the UK are encouraged to apply for financial support from NDCS to undertake Level 1 and Level 2 swim teaching / coaching qualifications. NDCS can fund up to 90% of a coaching course, to a maximum of £750.

Applicants must be aged 16+, with priority given to those who;

- have experience coaching or working with deaf young people

- are deaf, or can demonstrate British Sign Language (Level 2+) skills

- can demonstrate how undertaking the coaching qualification will lead to an increase in deaf young people participating in swimming.

Round 2 of the Coach Bursary Scheme is now open. Applicants can apply through the application form found here – Coach Bursary Scheme.

What has this got to do with you?

Please share this information with any deaf young people (or adults) who may be interested in gaining a swim teaching / coaching qualification to become a swimming teacher / coach. Or to any deaf young people (or adults) who may be interested in improving their existing swim teaching / coaching qualification.

The National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) has recently received information both from Lancashire County Council as a result of
a Freedom of Information request, as well as from Local Deaf Children’s Societies about services for deaf children in the area. NDCS is particularly concerned about:

1. Plans to cut 2.7 Teacher of the Deaf posts, cuts to 2 Communication Support Worker posts as well as a 0.3 cut to deaf role model posts in
2012/13. These were revealed in a recent Freedom of Information request.
2. Lack of commitment from the council to review the current social care pathways to ensure that they are as robust as possible for deaf children and young people.
3. The level of involvement of parents in changes to services.

What are we going to do about it?

We have put together a questionnaire for parents to fill out so we can share your experience of services for deaf children to the Council. NDCS and Local Deaf Children’s Societies are meeting with the Council on the 5 July, and we want to ensure that we are able to represent your views. This questionnaire will still remain open after this meeting. More information For more information about what is going on, please check our webpage dedicated to Lancashire.

About Us

We're a group of parents and those working with deaf children who want a better deal for deaf children and their families.

We feel that it is helpful to come together to share information and meet others in the same position because by coming together we are able to give support and swap ideas.

At Fylde DCS, you'll find both deaf and hearing parents with a wealth of experience of deafness. They may have experienced some of the difficulties you may be facing. We may be able to help or, if not, we can put you in touch with others who can.
